This is one of best parts of a trip to Andaman Islands. Here you get to see the wild nature as well as its beauty. An Andaman trip would be incomplete without a trip to Baratang. The Island belongs to the North and Middle Andaman administrative district, part of the Indian union territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The island lies 150 km north of Port Blair.
Regular bus services are available from STS Bus Terminal, Aberdeen Bazar or It is advisable to take a conducted tour of the Baratang islands, if you want to return on the same day. The journey is in 2 phases Port Blair to Jirkatang and then Jirkatang to Baratang. Once you start from Port Blair early morning at around 04:00, the first halt is at Jirkatang (40 km from Port Blair on road). At Jirkatang you will get a forest/police check post and from here starts a stretch of 49 km forest (Jarwah Reserve Forest), where you cannot halt your vehicle or walk on foot or take snaps/video.
If you take it from the tourism point of view, then this island is an unexplored gem filled with pure beauty and natural wonders. This must visit destination slouches with verdant green meadows and thick mangrove forests. Incredible yet overlooked place Baratang Island houses some unique and fascinating attractions like the impressive limestone caves and interesting mud volcanoes. Another such attraction in Baratang Island that is visited by many tourists is the Mud Volcano. It so happens that the mud is pushed upward by a natural gas emitting from underneath created by decaying organic matter from underground. Baratang Island can be considered as a one-day trip destination but if you happen to dwell in its peaceful surroundings, then the Island provides accommodations like Forest and PWD guest houses.
